Memoir 1, Page 108, Fort Henry

"The rebel general who surrendered Fort Henry Tenn"

Fort Henry was surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant by Confederate general Lloyd Tilghman on February 6, 1862. As Woods writes, Tilghman found himself to be overwhelmed by pouring rain and Union fire on top of a natural disadvantage due to the geographical location of the fort surrounded by rising rivers. This surrender of Fort Henry opened up Grant’s path to take Fort Donelson a week later and the Union’s capture of the Cumberland River.
